Two Arrested In Verizon Strike: Face Up To 18 Months in Jail & $3500 Fine

It is unclear how long Verizon labor dispute will continue

Eleven days into the Verizon strike, two people have been arrested on the picket line in Wise County and it’s unclear how long the labor dispute will continue.

About 300 workers are on strike in far Southwest Virginia, among 45,000 people who work for Verizon’s wireline division in an area that stretches from Virginia to New England.

The local workers, who are picketing Verizon facilities in Wise County and the city of Norton, say health care and job security are among the key issues. They include call center workers, who typically earn $20 to $25 an hour, and technicians, who earn more.

According to court records, two Wise County women have been charged with two misdemeanors – obstructing free passage and failing to obey a conservator of the peace – for blocking a vehicle from entering a local facility Aug. 8.

Each woman faces a penalty of up to 18 months in jail and a $3,500 fine if convicted. Both have been released on their own recognizance.
