A threatened strike this week by 16,000 grocery workers in the New York City area appears less likely as three major supermarket operators reached a tentative agreement with the trustees of the workers’ pension and health funds on key benefit issues, union officials said.

The operators of nearly 150 supermarkets in the area had called for a wage freeze and for an end to Sunday premium pay for new hires, issues that still need to be resolved before a new agreement is in place.
