Teamsters ticked over Dunkin’ Donuts’ open-shop proposal

While some reports are that there has been “substantial progress” in ongoing talks between Boston Local 25 of the Teamsters and Dunkin’ Donuts franchise supplier, the Teamster did file an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations  Board.

An article in the Patriot Ledger, however, may give a clue about what the fight is really over: the employer’s unwillingness to agree to forced union dues.

Sean O’Brien, president of Local 25 in Charlestown, said his union’s members are angry that Northeast DCP proposed making the massive Bellingham warehouse that serves Dunkin’ franchisees in New England an open-shop location.  Such a measure would allow employees to work there without joining the union.

In addition, O’Brien is apparently upset that a decertification card was allegedly mailed to employees over the weekend.
