Gov. Mark Parkinson said Tuesday that the agreement the state and Hawker Beechcraft Corp. had reached was a sign of Kansas being more aggressive in its efforts to keep aircraft jobs in the state.

The incentive package the state will provide Hawker will only kick in when the company reaches a new work contract with its machinists union.

Talks between the union and Hawker began in August, but were suspended late last week after union officials became aware of new offer from Louisiana to move the entire company to Baton Rouge.

The talks themselves had begun a year before the current agreement runs out, with the company telling the union the result of a contract vote would have a direct correlation to its future footprint in Wichita.

After Tuesday’s announcement, it seems the company — and now the state — has rolled the ball even farther in the union’s court.
