The community is rallying behind steelworkers locked out by U.S. Steel, with people dropping by with sandwiches, coffee and timmies doughnuts.

From the elderly couple who came by with sandwiches early this morning to honks from passing truckers, the support is touching for the 40 pickets outside the Wilckox St. Gate late this morning.

“I’m really proud of the support we’re getting from the community,” said picket captain Gary Seguin just as retired high school principal Dave Hutton dropped off coffee and doughnuts for the locked out workers.

Picket lines at Hamilton’s U.S. Steel Canada plant have been calm today after some 900 workers were locked out by the steelmaker on Sunday.
