Covington Paperworkers Union Local 675 notched another court victory Friday when the Virginia Supreme Court denied an appeal by rival United Steelworkers Local 8-675 that sought to overturn an earlier court decision that essentially tossed USW out of the union hall in Covington.
“Arrangements are being made for CPU to move into the union hall as soon as possible,” John Fishwick, CPU’s attorney, said Monday.
In January, Alleghany County Circuit Court Judge Michael Irvine ruled that CPU has the right to exclusive use of the hall on Prospect Street and related personal property. USW appealed that ruling.
USW has refused to surrender the property to CPU Local 675 since the latter won a vote in October 2009 that established it, instead of USW Local 8-675, as the bargaining unit for about 500 workers at the MeadWestvaco paper mill. The sprawling factory occupies land in both Covington and Alleghany County. MeadWestvaco is the largest employer and taxpayer for both.
