WARNING: Some viewers may find the video below, of a student being punched in the face repeatedly by another student, disturbing.
What many may find even more disturbing is the fact that the teacher stood by, with his hands in his pockets, as the student was beaten. However, what is truly appalling is the fact that the American Federation of Teachers is protecting the teacher’s actions inaction.
According to the Teachers’ Union, the student’s teacher was justified in standing there with his hands in his pockets while a kid got beaten because, in the union’s words:
“Teachers have intervened in the past,” acknowledged Rena Honea of Alliance/AFT. “They have been injured. They have not been able to return to work. They have been reprimanded for intervening. So there is a huge question mark as to what’s truly appropriate.”
If the teachers’ unions have become so jaded (read: warped) that it accepts (and protects) a grown man—teacher or not—standing idly by while a minor under his care is beaten, then the unions are truly fighting against the best interests of children.

Yeah? Back it up. There is *no question mark* regarding what’s ‘truly appropriate’.
I had something very much like this happen to me when I was in high school. Even though I wear glasses and am closer to being a physical weakling I fought back. That’s what his kid should have done. I know that they teach you in school to rely on teachers for defense. Which is wrong!!(My father taught me to fight back). Teachers aren’t trained referees for boxing matches nor can you easily break up a two person fight with only one adult. If the teacher had restrained the aggressor would the other student have then punched back? By law unions must represent their members in any dispute with management. So would Monday morning quarterback, Mr Recon, like to state what would be “truly appropriate” or politically correct from his viewpoint?
You are incorrect in inferring in a blanket statement that unions must represent members “in any dispute with management” (which infers regardless of the merits of the dispute). The member is entitled to representation, however, a union does not have to file a grievance if, in their reasonable judgement, the grievance lacks merit.
