UFCW ‘Outraged’ CBS Won’t Air Ad Attacking Target

7

As we’ve posted in the LaborUnionReport News, the United Food & Commercial Workers has targeted Target Stores for unionization. The union, which has been largely unsuccessful in its more than a decade old attempt to unionize Wal-Mart, has an election schedule at a Target store in Valley Stream, New York.

In typical “corporate campaign” style, the UFCW is hitting Target with everything it can.

The UFCW has set up a webpage with this statement:

We love Target. But Target has not treated us fairly. They need to change their view of the associates. When they grow, we should share in that growth. But despite record earnings, management “Expects More, Pays Less.”

The union has also filed charges at the National Labor Relations Board accusing Target of threatening employees, interrogating workers, as well as preventing them from discussing their employment on social networking sites.

The union also created an ad that it sought to air on CBS. However, CBS refused to air the ad, prompting the UFCW to complain on its blog that CBS had contacted the union to advertise, not the other way around.

“They contacted us, not vice versa. They did so after seeing the press reports about Target workers participating in the first federally monitored Union election at a Target store. Our message content was made clear from day one. It is outrageous and immoral for them to now reject the advertisement,” Purcell stated. “The aisles at Target and the halls of CBS both stink tonight with the smell of censorship.”

Here is the ad:

There’s no word whether the UFCW will file an unfair labor practice charge against CBS. However, given the current NLRB’s union extremism and desire to expand the law, that may be the next arrow in the union’s quiver.

  1. The UFCW has failed in it’s long term campaign with Wal-Mart so, like a typical bully, now it goes after Target. In Canada where they organized a few Wal-Mart stores, each store has eventually de-certified with the latest application for de-certification at the St. Hynenthe store in Quebec. The reality is that UFCW is a desperate union looking to grab new members dues at any cost. They are culturally incapable of changing as they are married to hate and loathing for successful business models. I feel sorry for the members!

    • You sound like a typical anti union consultant that gets paid huge amounts of money to go around and scare, lie, and intimidate workers.

Wall-Mart illegally shut down their stores after the Canadian supreme court ruled in the favor of the workers. You should be ashamed of your profession and what you do for a living. Your motivated by greed and power.

One day there will be a man like Ralph Nader elected and all you CEO’s and consultants will be serving 30 years in prison for your illegal and unethical actions.

In the business model you speak of is slavery, your right – The UFCW will fight against that model.

      • Really, Mr. Giordino, if you’re going to spout off about ‘huge amounts of money,’ you should really clean up your own house first:

Your union president pulled down $258,937 last year, and your secretary-treasurer $223,489.

You sound like a typical idealist who can only point at others through the walls of his own glass house.

  2. UFCW rejected in New York by Target employees. I work for Target myself and I wouldn’t want to have to pay union dues supporting political activities that I highly disagree with,Politically and Morally(I’m a Republican).

    • Union dues are NOT used for political operations, its against federal law.

It does boggle my mind that a person working at Target would be a Republican, you don’t make over $250,000 a year!

      • Now, you’re just being naive and misleading, Mr. Giordano.

Union dues cannot go to individual candidates. They can, however, be used for lobbying, ‘educational’ purposes, as well as GOTV.
