While stealing $40,000 may not seem like a lot, it is likely a very significant amount to a local union with only 150 members.

The financial secretary of a local carpenters union pleaded guilty Tuesday to embezzling $40,000 of the union’s assets over a six-year span.

Jonathan Henry Smith, 42, admitted to the felony during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Juneau before Judge Timothy Burgess. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.

Prosecutors said Smith was elected as financial secretary of Carpenters Local Union 2247 in 2006, and began stealing from the organization the following year until 2012. The union has approximately 150 members in Juneau.
