Machinists Union Only The Latest To Fail At Unionizing Delta Air Lines’ Flight Attendants

Delta FA Voting No

The International Association of Machinists has withdrawn its application to hold an election in order to unionize 20,000 flight attendants at Delta Air, according to the union’s website.

The union stated that, although it believed in January that it had 60% of the flight attendants’ signatures, it had “recently discovered that a number of the cards submitted to us contain insufficient information or questionable signatures.”

By our calculation, the number of questionable cards makes our showing of interest borderline. However, rather than waiting months for a determination by the NMB, we believe the best course of action is to avoid further delay and withdraw our current application, renew our organizing drive and file again twelve months from the date of the dismissal of our application, as is permitted by law.

We apologize to all of you for this delay but under the circumstances it is the only way to correct this unfortunate situation while continuing our drive to obtain the economic justice Flight Attendants deserve.

The union must now wait a year before it can make a request for a new election.

The Machinists’ union attempt at unionizing Delta’s flight attendants is only the latest union attempt at Delta.

The Association of Flight Attendants—a division of the Communications Workers of America—has failed on numerous occasions to unionize Delta’s flight attendants, as has the Transport Workers Union.

  1. Shaking my head at Jeromes comment. Educate please. Why in the sweet baby Jesus’ name would they strike? Cry like babies because the IAM failed them? The IAM needs to focus on taking care of the workers it represents before chasing more business. Had the IAM taken care of the ExpressJet flight attendants, they may have had a fighting chance at Delta. The XJT FAs are not represented fairly. It’s a huge mess, starting with “elected” leadership that wasn’t elected by her peers. Good ole boy club. Delta FAs dodged a bullet.

  2. We dodged a bullet is right. It would have been a colossal disaster had they succeeded in getting their claws into our wallets and onto Delta property. There is absolutely NOTHING that the IAM can do for Delta flight attendants besides take our money. Thank GOD they failed (again).

  3. And Delta employees just received a 14.5% increase which is far and above what any union has recently negotiated for their members. And the IAM’s election had many fraudulent cards submitted to get to a vote. Not exactly the kind of organization you want representing you.
