With the exception of a couple, most labor unions are staying ‘mum’ on the topic of Democrat-Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s [D-NY] so-called “Green New Deal.”
Perhaps it is because they were burned once before over the false promise of “green jobs,” however, following last week’s botched release of the so-called “Green New Deal” by Democrat-Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the union movement is staying mostly silent on the topic.
One notable exception to this is the Laborers International Union of North America’s President, Terry O’ Sullivan, who issued a blistering attack on the Green New Deal, stating that the Green New Deal “threatens to destroy workers’ livelihoods, increase divisions and inequality.”
The other exception, SEIU Local 32BJ—a union that endorsed Ocasio-Cortez during her election—issued a press release in support of Occasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, stating [in part], “as our country weighs the viability of the Green New Deal, we urge elected officials, labor unions, environmental groups and community organizations to support and grow its vision and to be smart, compassionate and bold.”
However, with the exception of those two, most other unions–including the 56-union federation, the AFL-CIO–have remained conspicuously.
