10,000 nurses may strike three New York hospitals if their demands over staffing ratios are not met, says union.
NEW YORK, NY—On Monday, the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) gave notice that it intends to strike April 2.
“This follows months of stalled contract negotiations because of a dispute over staffing levels,” according to ModernHealthcare.com.
“Members of the New York State Nurses Association announced an April 2nd strike date at Mount Sinai, Montefiore and New York Presbyterian hospitals systems. An official ‘10-Day’ notice of intent to strike was delivered today,” NYSNA stated in a press release. “The strike notice affects more than ten thousand nurses at the three hospitals systems where there are currently contract talks underway.”
“The union has released more than 2,500 complaints, known as protests of assignment, from nurses at the three health systems,” noted ModernHealthcare.com. “A spokesman for the NYC Hospital Alliance said last month that those complaints represented just 0.1% of all scheduled shifts last year.”

The union threatened to strike in 2011 and 2015 as well, before the two sides reached agreements. In both cases, though, staffing ratios were a primary issue.
