Over the last several years, 14 top officials of the United Auto Workers (UAW) and one spouse has been have been indicted and sent to jail. Here’s the list:
Over the last several years, the U.S. government’s corruption case against the United Auto Workers (UAW) has nabbed over a dozen top UAW officials (and one spouse) as having taken bribes (“kickbacks”), or misspent UAW members’ money.
The corruption at the top of the UAW has been so broad that, for the casual reader, it is hard to keep up with those who have been caught so far.
Thankfully, however, the U.S. Justice Department is keeping a list.
In December (2020), the U.S. Department of Justice published a list of all those who had been sentenced at the time* or were awaiting sentencing.
Here is the list:
“The fifteen individuals convicted of fraud and corruption crimes include former UAW Vice President Joseph Ashton (30 months in prison) former FCA Vice President for Employee Relations Alphons Iacobelli (66 months in prison), former FCA Financial Analyst Jerome Durden (15 months in prison), former Director of FCA’s Employee Relations Department Michael Brown (12 months in prison), former senior UAW officials Virdell King (60 days in prison), Keith Mickens (12 months in prison), Nancy A. Johnson (12 months in prison), Monica Morgan, the widow of UAW Vice President General Holiefield (18 months in prison), former UAW Vice President Norwood Jewell (15 months in prison), and former senior UAW official Michael Grimes (28 months). In addition, the following UAW officials have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing: former UAW President Gary Jones, former senior UAW official Jeffrey Pietrzyk, former UAW Region 5 Director and UAW Board member Vance Pearson, former UAW Midwest CAP President Edward “Nick” Robinson, and former UAW President Dennis Williams.”
- * – Former UAW presidents Dennis Williams and Gary Jones were sentenced in May and June 2021 to 21 months and 28 months in prison, respectively. Vance Pearson, another corrupt UAW leader was sentenced to 12 months behind bars in July.
It’s not over.
In Vance Pearson’s July sentencing, the Detroit News noted that “the Labor Department and IRS agents who have spent at least six years probing corruption within the U.S. auto industry have not finished investigating several unidentified targets.” [Emphasis added.]
