The United Auto Workers has paid tens of thousands to individuals and groups for help during its Nissan campaign, according a grassroots group and financial records.
With a little more than a week before the NLRB conducts an election to determine whether or not Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi will become unionized by the United Auto Workers, a group of Nissan workers opposed to unionization is raising questions about the moneys paid by the UAW to its public supporters.
For years, the UAW has enlisted the help of people not employed by Nissan, such as actor Danny Glover and Sen. Bernie Sanders, as well as pastors and civil rights activists to try to tie the issue of civil rights to the need for unionization.
However, on its Facebook page, the group Nissan Technicians for Truth and Jobs is calling into question the tens of thousands of dollars the UAW has given to pro-UAW pastors and “non profits” to boost the UAW’s efforts in Mississippi.
With screenshots of payments made to UAW supporting pastors and groups, the NTTJ group states:
UAW PAID HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO NON-PROFITS CONNECTED TO LOCAL PASTORS WHO HAVE PUSHED NISSAN WORKERS TO VOTE YES
Be sure to ask your UAW supporter or organizer about this the next time you see him or her. Show them this and see what kind of answer you get. Probably complete silence.
Do these local pastors truly believe the UAW has our best interests at hearts or do they believe the UAW will keep throwing $50,000 and $100,000 checks at them and their web of non-profits, churches, charities, and community organizations?
Indeed, as the UAW’s most recent finances reveal (in full below), the UAW paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to individuals—who, as “temporary organizers,” are likely unnamed Nissan workers—as well as rents and other expenses in 2016 for its campaign at Nissan.
While the UAW spend over $8 million on organizing expenses last year, it is difficult to determine just how much has been spent on its campaign at Nissan in 2017, as the UAW’s financial reports for 2017 will not be submitted to the Department of Labor until early 2018.
