Nine months after the UPS contract with the Teamsters expired, a new national agreement goes into effect.

The five-year contract covering about 250,000 Teamster-represented workers at UPS took effect at 12:01 am on Monday, after workers in Michigan ratified the last outstanding supplemental agreement, according to a Teamsters press release.

The contract takes effect nine months after the Teamsters’ prior contract at UPS expired.

The new contract follows a contentious ratification process that saw the Teamsters’ union executive board overruling a vote last year by Teamster members to reject the contract.

“The national contract was deemed ratified after a clear majority voted No, with the Hoffa administration using the anti-member and pro-employer ‘two-thirds to reject’ rule,” reported the Teamsters for a Democratic Union. “Then the same trick was used on a number of the supplements.”

The final supplemental agreement that had held up the national contract from going into effect was ratified over the weekend when the Metro Detroit Rider passed 295-121.

Only 18.43% of the eligible members in Detroit voted, according to the TDU.

“The company has been notified of the ratification and will attempt to implement required raises during the next weekly pay period,” according to the Teamsters.
