Beleaguered airplane-maker Boeing has issued 60-day WARN Act notifications to the Machinists union local in Puget Sound.

Following Boeing’s announcement earlier this week that it would be laying off thousands of workers, the International Association of Machinists (IAM), local 751 in Puget Sound told members that it had received notification from the company that 3,800 workers would be receiving 60-day notices under the WARN Act.

“Today, we were notified by the Company that approximately 3800 WARN notices would be issued to our members by the end of this week, Friday, May 29th,” the union stated on its website.

On Wednesday, Boeing had announced that is would be “eliminating more than 12,000 U.S. jobs, including 6,770 involuntary layoffs, as the largest American planemaker restructures in the face of the coronavirus pandemic,” reported Reuters.

The company also announced “several thousand remaining layoffs” in coming months, but did not say where those cuts would take place.

In addition to the COVID crisis harming air travel in 2020, Boeing has also faced a tough 2019 after two fatal plane crashes grounded its most popular plane, the 737 Max.

“In April, Boeing recorded zero orders for the second time this year and customers canceled another 108 orders for the 737 MAX,” Reuters reported, “compounding its worst start to a year since 1962.”
