Warning of a ‘Dark Winter’ during a zoom meeting, Biden backed union bosses’ calls for $3.4 trillion in additional government spending.
With the national debt at a staggering $27 trillion (and climbing), during a zoom conference with union leaders and business executive, union leaders repeated their call “trillions of dollars in coronavirus economic relief, and in measures to protect workers from the ravages of the modern-day plague,” according to the Marxist publication People’s World.
“We need to manufacture the respirators and personal protective equipment (PPE) that continue to be in short supply,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told Biden, Harris, the CEOs and fellow union leaders Marc Perrone of the Food and Commercial Workers, Rory Gamble of the Auto Workers, Lee Saunders of AFSCME and Mary Kay Henry of the Service Employees.
“We need to make the investments to retrofit our workplaces and schools to meet the ventilation and distancing requirements scientists and workplace safety experts tell us are absolutely vital,” Trumka stated, adding, “We need to make sure all COVID-19 cases are counted and reported so we know where the major outbreaks are before they get worse.”
Unions have, for months, been pushing for the so-called HEROES Act–a $3.4 trillion stimulus package that passed the U.S. House of Representatives in June, but stalled in the U.S. Senate.
The HEROES Act has been roundly criticized by conservatives and fiscal hawks as “a laundry list of liberal goals and pet projects.”
In May, Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) President David Williams stated, “since the start of the Coronavirus crisis, Congress has spent roughly $3 trillion – more than $23,000 for each American household – in stimulus measures to help struggling families and businesses. Now, Speaker Pelosi and her congressional allies are using the pandemic as a pretext to push through wasteful spending measures that’ll balloon the debt without helping the people hurting the most. Congressional leadership should focus on helping the households hit hardest by this catastrophe, instead of pushing pet projects and pork-barrel spending.”
The Biden administration’s economic plan is based on the “Build Back Better” proposals offered during the campaign, reported Transport Topics.
“The campaign proposal included $2 trillion in spending on clean energy and infrastructure. The goal is to create millions of jobs building the wind turbines, sustainable homes and electric vehicles needed to rapidly throttle U.S. greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change.”
In September, House Democrats introduced a scaled down version of the HEROES Act.
However, like its predecessor, it is also DOA.
